Lieutenant Riou, Carington Bowles: Naval Homosexuality, 1790

In the military, including the Navy, homosexuality was quite commonly encountered.

Friendship (homosexuality) takes shape in the world that lies beyond the horizon of the domestic sphere and requires for its expression a military or a political staging ground, it depends for its meaning upon social action. 1

Military homosexuality is most significant among soldiers and sailors, and is also expressed in prisons (lower classes). Aristocrats (higher classes) often express such sexuality of power in political affairs. 2
